Replacing Matlab&NI cards with a python/open source solution

I am currently using Matlab in combination with different National Instrument I/O cards, and because of obvious license problems, am searching for an open source alternative to either Matlab in combination with those cards, or a complete open source solution.

In the best case I would like to replace Matlab with python.
For combining NI Cards with python I found pyDAQmx ( http://pythonhosted.org/PyDAQmx/ ) and would implement the GUI using pyQt ( http://www.riverbankcomputing.com/news )

Do you have any experience with pyDAQmx or could suggest alternatives to it, and or to the National Instrument IO cards?
